On January 26, 2008, the Scouts of
Troop72.com went to their first-ever
Klondike Derby. It was a blast! Over 300 Scouts (and 60 adults) were
on hand as 37 sled teams (patrols) navigated the 26 different stops
along the way around Lake Mitchell at
L.E. Phillips Scout Reservation.
Our Scouts were quite surprised to get a FIRST PLACE in their age group for the Eagle Patrol, and a very close SECOND place for the Wolf Patrol (missing by only 10 points out of 5000). Not to mention two awards for sled design! This will be definitely be an annual activity from now on for our troop. Thanks to the dozens and dozens of volunteers, and especially to Dave Linse, the mastermind behind the whole extravaganza. Anyway, here are a some photos I took with my FZ50 camera. (I tried to get close-ups of as many Scouts as I could, not just the ones from our troop.) See also the newspaper column about the Klondike. - Tom Arneberg (toma@arneberg.com) |
